Was Arrest at Police Station Necessary?

We have recently secured damages for wrongful arrest/detention when it was agreed that it was not necessary to arrest a suspect and that the officer should have considered whether or not questions/evidence could have been obtained via an alternative to arrest. Consequently, DNA, photographs and prints obtained have now been destroyed.
