Changes to Paternity Leave & Pay ...

On 6 April 2010, a new regulatory regime came into force which entitles eligible employees to take up to 26 weeks' Additional Paternity Leave ('APL'). Employees are entitled to APL if the mother returns to work early following the birth of a new baby.
This will usually apply to fathers but it also includes the partner of the mother (or adopter) in relation to same-sex couples.
Employers should ensure that their family-friendly policies are up to date and may want to consider issuing revised contracts of employment for those employees who may wish to take advantage of the increased flexibility brought about by the changes.
Employees should seek advice regarding their rights and eligibility for APL. The changes provide families with greater flexibility when caring for a child and/or returning to work.
