Barnsley Family Mediation Service at MKB Solicitors

 How can we assist you?

When relationships break down emotions run high.  There will be important arrangements to be made for the future.  Talking face to face with your former partner may seem like the hardest thing to do and, sometimes, you will need help to get started and focus on what really matters to you.  That is where MKB's Family Mediation Service can help you.

Our Resolution trained Family Mediators are here to help you reach agreement on how to make the best arrangements for the future, whether that is in relation to financial issues, children or both.

Our Resolution trained mediators are also practising family solicitors and will ensure that any proposals that you arrive at through mediation can be made legally binding, should that be necessary or should you wish.

If we can help you to resolve issues, it will save you both parties a considerable amount rather than if such issues have to be resolved in Court or via your own solicitors.

What is family mediation?

It is a process by which our specially trained Family Mediators will help you to reach agreement about how to make the best arrangements for the future, either in respect of children, finances or any other issues that arise following your separation.  Our Family Mediators are always impartial and will assist both of you equally to resolve problems.

Our Family Mediators are not there to impose solutions upon you, nor to give either of you legal advice. They will work with both of you equally to find a solution to your problems, sharing legal information where appropriate.

When proposals for an agreement are reached, our Family Mediators will prepare the necessary documents for you to each take to your own solicitors (should you wish to do so) before the proposals are turned into any legally binding form.

Why choose mediation?

Mediation brings real benefits in that it

  • avoids the risks and substantial cost of going to Court
  • reduces tension and hostility
  • helps you make informed and creative decisions that are right for your circumstances
  • helps children by showing that parents can work together to resolve issues
  • our Resolution trained Mediators are also qualified and practising solicitors who understand the law as well as being trained in mediation skills
  • discussions take place in the comfort and safety of our offices
  • our Family Mediators give you impartial guidance information and help, so that together practical and fair solutions can be reached for the benefit of you and your families.
  • it saves you money and time.

How much does it cost?

A couple will often need, on average, 4 mediation sessions with each session lasting 1 ½ hours.  With this example the cost of the sessions and the preparation of the relevant documentation would, if shared equally, be £630.00 each.  This is considerably less than the cost of reaching an agreement through using your own solicitors which is typically likely to be £3,000.00 each and can be considerably more if disputes have to be resolved in Court.

Is mediation for me?

Mediation does not suit everyone and there are some circumstances where mediation will not be appropriate.  To enable you to find out more about our  mediation service we offer a free meeting of up to 30 minutes each with one of our Family Mediators.  This is a separate appointment for each of you, as the purpose of the meeting is also to allow the Family Mediator to assess whether mediation is appropriate to your particular case.
